Optimus is Tesla’s humanoid robot. It is not for sale and cannot be reserved. Tesla converted its former Model S and X line at Fremont for Optimus. In April Musk said production would start in late July or August; the July update softened that to ‘later this year’. Tesla’s Q3 update on 21 October said production had begun on the Fremont high-volume line, calling the output its ‘first production-quality bots’, though it gave no start date. On the call Musk described it as early production and said reaching full rate would take at least a year, with the design still changing and the hands among the hardest parts. He now expects to deliver Optimus to companies outside Tesla around the end of 2027, industrial uses first, with home robots later. That replaces his 2024 hope of sales to other companies in 2026. His Davos line about selling to the public by the end of 2027 is the only consumer timing on record, and Musk’s robot deadlines have a long history of slipping. The third-generation design has still not been formally unveiled; Musk promised a demonstration video in a month or so. The long-quoted $20,000-$30,000 price is a scale aspiration. For UK households and businesses, there is nothing to plan around yet.
