FSD (Supervised) is a driver-assistance system: the car steers, brakes and navigates on city streets while the driver must watch and remain legally responsible. It is not self-driving in the legal sense. The Dutch regulator RDW approved it on 10 April 2026 under UN Regulation 171, making the Netherlands the first European country to do so. Several other EU states followed; Slovakia, on 16 October, was reported as the ninth, and Latvia, on 26 October, as the tenth. Tesla has since renamed the system ‘Assisted Driving’ on its European websites, reportedly including the UK one, after German criticism of the old name. The new name changes nothing about what is allowed on British roads. An EU-wide vote did not happen at the committee’s 6 October meeting, and Germany’s transport ministry says a decision is now expected in December 2026. The UK left the EU system, so approval here goes through the Vehicle Certification Agency, which does not automatically recognise the Dutch certificate. A Freedom of Information response published on WhatDoTheyKnow says the VCA had not carried out type-approval work on Tesla FSD. In other words, Tesla had not formally applied in the UK at that point. UK Teslas can still be sold with the £6,800 Full Self-Driving Capability package, but the city-street features stay switched off. Any UK date is speculation until Tesla files and the VCA rules. For UK drivers and fleet buyers, do not pay for FSD expecting supervised city driving on a known date.
